David’s reputation as a painter who skilled, energetic and incredibly insightful regarding all aspects of art prompted the Metropolitan Museum of Art to invite him to lecture at their esteemed program. We are very excited to off your this opportunity to study with someone whose immense knowledge of painting is matched with a highly energetic and encouraging teaching style.
David begins each day with a painting demonstration and examples from historical and contemporary artists. Next, he makes a personal visit to each participant to see where they want to go with their painting and offer gentle encouraging guidance, whether they are working in oil, mixed media, watercolor, acrylic or other media. You may bring your own photos to work from or choose from David’s assortment.
DAY 1 – SUMMER ROMANCE
David will demonstrate painting the light, water, reflections on an idyllic summer lake. You’ll learn to how to paint reeds, leafy abundance, distant shores and meadows and; how to paint sunlight as it filters through trees and creates shadows. You’ll learn new strategies for easily and and quickly creating richly detailed landscapes. Exploring how historic artists painted landscapes from Rubens to Monet, you’ll then delve into how contemporary artists approach landscapes as well. You’ll understand how they composed their works, their palettes and the tolls they used. David will demonstrate in oil and mixed media, and show you how to persuasively simulate the atmosphere of your chosen subject.
DAY 2 – THE BIG PICTURE, NEAR AND FAR (Painting the Panoramic Landscape)
David takes you on an adventure through vast reedy meadows and across an infinite wetland with translucent shallows and sparkling sunlight. You’ll explore see how artists from Monet to contemporary artists created vast grassy and watery plains, and learn how to paint the feeling of acres of rich foliage and translucent water using a variety of new painting techniques. David’s demonstration will use oils and mixed media and a large range of tools to inspire your creativity.
DAY 3 – FALLING LEAVES
David takes you on a journey through leaves falling among sunlit trees. He creates the feeling of being embedded in nature with a window on an active, sun-filled Autumn scene. His demonstration will guide your from close up perspectives into the distance. David’s demonstration will be in oil and mixed media and will examine how past and contemporary artists explored the glory of Autumn.
