David’s reputation as a painter who combines artistic skill, knowledge and enthusiasm prompted the Metropolitan Museum of Art to invite him to lecture. Don’t miss out on your chance to study with someone whose exhaustive knowledge of painting is also matched with a humble and encouraging teaching style.
This 3-day workshop is structured around morning lecture and demo, and David spends the remainder of the day helping students individually at their level.
DAY 1 – EXPLORE THE ALCHEMY OF COLOR
David will explore the concept of how we biologically and psychologically perceive color and how we make varieties of color effects from the soft radiance of meadow grasses to the complex floral variations and reflections on water. You’ll discover color’s range of purpose across time and culture from ancient Greece and Impressionist France to Prada and Versace. David’s demonstrations will include creating new and widely different color effects in oils, acrylic and mixed media.
On this day you’ll learn how to:
- Evoke motion and space through color effects, and how color visions works
- Create luminosity, halation (the spreading of light beyond its proper boundaries to form a fog around the edges of a bright image), sparkle and after image effects
- Generate iridescence
- Enliven your work with color contrasts and translucence
- Use historic color codes to make more emotionally persuasive paintings
- Use the science of color in your works
DAY 2 – EXPLORE THE RESPLENDENT QUALITIES OF WATER
David will instruct you on how contemporary artists (whether realist or abstract) respond when the subject matter includes water. He will show you a variety of images of artist’s work and discuss their varying approaches. David’s demonstrations will include oils, acrylic and mixed media.
On this day you’ll learn how to:
- Paint the illusions of translucent lakes, pools and shimmering rolling streams
- Create reflections that quiver and cascades that fall, mist and roil
- Create the effects of reflections on wet pavement
DAY 3 – EXPLORE THE MERGING OF PAINT WITH DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Across the globe today’s artwork incorporates digital photography with paint and other materials. We will explore how the secrets of optical photography were used the past 600 years and discover how artists have used, disguised and hidden the use of the camera in their paintings, as well as how they are using computer software in their paintings today. David will provide the digital photography for you to incorporate into your work. Demonstrations will include ALL media, from oils, enamel pens and acrylic inks to powdered graphite while using other alternative tools.
On this day you’ll learn how to:
- Combine digital images with watercolor, oils, acrylic and inks using a variety of tools including blowers, squeegees, brayers and brushes
- Layer images and technology, creating new surfaces combining aluminum, paper and other materials
- Incorporate novel methods for mixing media
- Understand how technology has changed the purposes and appearance of art
