David’s reputation as a painter who combines artistic skill, knowledge and enthusiasm prompted the Metropolitan Museum of Art to invite him to lecture. Don’t miss out on your chance to study with someone whose immense knowledge of painting is also matched with a humble and encouraging teaching style.
This 3-day workshop is structured around morning lecture and demo, and David spends the remainder of the day helping students individually at their level.

DAY 1 – PAINTING THE SKY AND WAVES

How do wind, light and patterns in the sky appears in patterns in the ocean? David will demonstrate this concept using oil and acrylic, and you’ll watch the techniques, designs and subjects of sea painting come to life while he paints.

On this day you’ll learn:

  • How artists worked across time and cultures, the tools they used and how they used them
  • How past masters created persuasive seascapes and how the psychology of perception determines how and what we paint
DAY 2 – WATER IN WIND AND STREAM: TRANSLUCENCE, SHADOWS AND REFLECTIONS IN MOTION

Learn how to paint the feeling of transparent water mixed with shimmering reflections. David will show you the way while demonstrating in oil, and acrylic.

On this day you’ll learn:

  • How to paint the feeling of what’s under the water, what’s in the water, what’s on the water as well as the water’s motion
  • How to evoke motion and space through color effects
  • How to create luminosity, halation and sparkle
  • How to enliven your work with a color range of contrasts and harmonies
  • To use historic color codes to make more emotionally engaging paintings
  • To paint the illusions of translucent lakes, vernal ponds and the effects of reflections on wet pavement
DAY 3 – THE ATMOSPHERE IN LANDSCAPE: PAINTING THE MYSTERY OF MIST AND FOG

While demonstrating in oils, acrylics and mixed media David will help you discover how trees and other elements of nature reveal themselves in mist and fog.

On this day you’ll learn:

  • How to add the shrouding mystery of fog to your landscapes, whether a mist rising over meadow or fog settling over a river or lake
  • To explore the opportunities for abstraction found in misty atmospheres
  • How contemporary artists, whether realist or abstract respond when the subject includes water
