Steps to Infinity

by David D | posted in: Blog, Painting | 2

Our fascination with the feeling of a view of Infinity has an ancient history in visual art.  This is also true of our fascination with our perception of water’s translucence.  But combining these two perceptions into a single image rarely … Continued

Pathways into Abstraction

by David D | posted in: Blog, Classes, Painting | 2

Yesterday I hiked through a salt marsh near me. I was wearing tall rubber boots to allow tromping through the marsh onto muddy flats.  This was a mistake and, an opportunity.  Suddenly one foot, then the other sunk deeply into … Continued

Whispering Columns of Light

by David | posted in: Blog, Classes, Painting | 6

The ancient Roman architect, Vitruvius explained there were four orders of architecture, four types of columns in his opus De Architectura. His ideas still circulate in architecture today. But, his notion of capitals on columns is a reductionist idea. If … Continued

Ghosts in the Architecture

by David | posted in: Blog, Classes, Painting | 2

Painting and Architecture share a fanciful history. Ancient Roman artists enjoyed describing architectural space in frescos and mosaics. Their images were not what we today call realistic. But, they were perceived that way then. Audiences shift their needs and perceptions … Continued

Reflecting Lights

by David | posted in: Uncategorized | 4

The motif of painting wet city streets was not in the pictorial canon prior to the mid 19th century no doubt because city streets were rarely bricked or cobblestoned.   Even those surfaces were not as smooth and evenly reflective as … Continued

Electric Rain

by David | posted in: Blog, Classes, Painting | 6

With modern Cities came paved streets. With smooth and wet paved streets artists found new visual menu. Rain hits the smooth surface and spreads out like glass as it searches for depressions and flow opportunities.  On relatively level surfaces rainwater … Continued

David's Visions of Venice Live Online Workshop. We
David's Visions of Venice Live Online Workshop. We hope that we will see you this Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 1:00pm EDT for David's Visions of Venice Live Online Workshop. Please note that the Workshop will start at 1:00 pm EDT.
Join David in this 2-hour Visions of Venice Workshop to explore the joy and beauty of painting the atmosphere and play of light, water and reflections of Venice. David’s exciting new live online demonstration workshop on March 18 will explore different Visions of Venice, which has been a magnet of romance and mystery for artists throughout the centuries. He will briefly present iconic paintings of Venice by JMW Turner (1775-1851), Venetian view painters such as Antonio Canaletto (1697-1768) and Francesco Guardi (1712-1793), and later paintings by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) and Claude Monet (1840-1926). David will then paint a demonstration painting in mixed media (oil and acrylic) and will experiment with how to create the textures, atmosphere and motion of Venice with different tools and palettes. We hope that you can join David and create your own view of Venice.
There are no personal painting critiques in this Workshop, but David will be happy to answer any of your questions.
You will also receive access to an online recording for the Visions of Venice Workshop. If you cannot join us for the live Workshop, you can also register and watch the recorded version of the Workshop at your convenience. You are invited to paint along with David or just relax with a sandwich (or whatever).
You will receive the Zoom Link to the Visions of Venice Workshop in your registration confirmation and also again on the day before and the morning of the Workshop, so you will always be able to reach us.
We hope to see you there! You can register at www.daviddunlop.com.
